How to Play Solitaire

Solitaire is a classic card game enjoyed by millions around the world. Whether you’re new to the game or just need a refresher, this guide will walk you through the basics of how to play Solitaire (also known as Klondike Solitaire).

What You Need

  • A standard 52-card deck (no jokers)
  • A flat surface to play on

Game Setup

  1. Shuffle the deck thoroughly.
  2. Deal seven piles (tableau) from left to right. The first pile has one card, the second has two, and so on up to seven. Only the top card of each pile is face up; the rest are face down.
  3. Place the remaining cards in a single stock pile.
  4. Leave space for four foundation piles above the tableau.

Objective

The goal is to move all cards to the four foundation piles, sorted by suit and in ascending order from Ace to King.

Basic Rules

  • Only Kings can be placed in empty tableau spaces.
  • Cards in the tableau are built in descending order and alternating colors (e.g., red 7 on black 8).
  • You can move a sequence of face-up cards as a unit to another tableau pile if it follows the descending/alternating rule.
  • Turn over the top card of the stock pile to the waste pile; you can play the top card of the waste at any time.
  • Move cards to the foundation piles as soon as possible.

Tips for Winning

  • Always move Aces and Twos to the foundation as soon as you can.
  • Expose hidden cards in the tableau early.
  • Don’t automatically move cards to the foundation if it blocks useful moves in the tableau.
  • Try to keep empty tableau spaces available for Kings.

Conclusion

Solitaire is easy to learn but challenging to master. With practice, you’ll develop strategies to win more often. Enjoy the game and have fun improving your skills!
